Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM. Such a beautiful city.

I had the fortune to visit this past week, to speak at the first ever DSGNDAY conference and Amsterdam UX. Because of good friends, I also enjoyed several informal sketchnote meetups that were great fun.

I walked everywhere, and one day I managed to log 22,000+ steps, beating my old record in NYC. I ate delicious Dutch treats, and enjoyed tasty coffees and spent time with warm, wonderful friends. It was brilliant.

Here's a selection of photos I shot to tell the story in images:

New York City

NEW YORK CITY turned out to be just what I expected and nothing like what I'd expected, all at the same time. It was fascinating, rich, quirky, and fun.

I want to go back as soon as I can.

New York City has a unique vibe. It feels large and small, simple and complex, old and new. Somehow these strange contrasts work together perfectly.

My wife and I enjoyed four fantastic days in the city. We walked to restaurants, rode subway lines, busses, boats and cabs. We ate delicious food and spent time with dear friends. By the end, we were physically worn out but our spirits were alive and happy. It was an awesome trip.

Here's a selection of photos I shot to tell the story in images:

iPhone Photography

THE BEST CAMERA is the one you have with you. For me, that's my iPhone 3GS. I love having a decent camera with me at all times — and lately I've been especially enjoying Camera+ the $2 iPhone app.

Photos are captured in a lightbox, allowing me to shoot almost continuously. The app has convenient post-exposure controls and a variety of cool filters. I love posting images to Flickr, Twitter and Facebook immediately after they're shot.

Here are a few favorite photos captured with my iPhone:

Earth to Linnea! Do You Copy?
Summer SwingTV Time With Dad
Wet Cement 2
Railbridge at NoonRadiating Circle Grid iPhone Wallpaper

Because my photos turn out so well, I find myself shooting and experimenting with levels and filters all the time. Here's a full set of images captured on the iPhone.

Photographing Linnea

On Friday, my friend Derek Dysart stopped by the house to take photos of our 2-week old daughter, Linnea. We had a great time working the Derek, enjoying a house call after experiencing the agony of waiting for photoshoots at Sears.

I've known Derek was a photographer for a while, but never had a chance to hire him for a project until now. Boy am I glad we brought him in! Just few hours after our session, Derek posted this amazing photo of Linnea:

4059473972_f6e12189f7.jpg

Derek was able to capture Linnea in a special moment with this shot. Every time I look at it I'm just blown away with the expressiveness of her eyes in this image.

This experience with Derek also reminds why it's so important to hire people who know what they're doing. In this case, Derek has spent time building his craft of shooting portraits, and it really shows.

Derek remarked to me that this shot is one of his top 5, and reminds him why he loves photography so much.

Hire Derek Dysart

If you're looking for a photographer for portraits in your home, or other photo assignments, drop Derek an email or give him a call at +1 (262) 758-2456.

BarCampMilwaukee3 and PhotoWalk Images

BCMKE PhotoWalk: Original Stained Glass LogoHad a great time today at BarCampMilwaukee3, especially the photowalk after lunch today.

About half way through the walk we encountered James Haertel, who invited the photowalkers to tour the original Pabst Brewery buildings in Milwaukee.

Images of the PhotoWalk have been posted Flickr if you'd like to check 'em out.
