2008 Sketchtoon Coffee Calendar is Available!
2008 Sketchtoon Coffee Calendar now complete and up for sale! You can buy it for $19.99 plus shipping at CafePress, with US and international shipping available.
Last year, I started drawing sketchtoon style coffee illustrations in my Moleskine sketchbook in ink, scanning each illustration into the Mac for colorization in Photoshop.
Each month's illustration features a different coffee drink, with several unique drinks from various areas of the world, like the Flat White from down under and the Greek Frappe. Check out the cover and 12 illustrations at Flickr. I'm very pleased with how the calendar turned out.

I've posted several photos of the original ink sketchtoons to Flickr:
It's a great gift idea for coffee lovers who would enjoy a unique coffee calendar.

Excellent. Just purchased one. I think I'll put it in the office.

Awesome calendar! If I used calendars I'd buy one right now.
What are the chances you'd whip up a digital version, say wallpapers of the calendar art, for a donation or price? I'd be happy to pay for such a thing.
I know you have the art on Flickr but they are not sized for the desktop and I'd rather give you some money for your work.
In any case, great job! I'm glad I found your blog (subscribed).

I don't use them either Les, but I just want to hang the art in my office!
That would be an interesting idea Mike to have some type of calendar like thing, but without the calendar! Not sure if Cafe has anything like that.

Ian, awesome! I'd be honored to appear in your office. :-)
Les, thanks for this interesting idea. I do have the original art which is 2300 pixels wide, which is probably sufficient for most desktops.
Problem is, once I release the high-res art, it can then be used for other stuff, hence the low-res stuff on Flickr. I haven't yet resolved that issue.
Any ideas guys? Maybe I'm too worried about the ramifications of high-res art being in the wild?
Theoretically, If I were to proceed with a digital download of desktops, what do you feel would be a fair price for the high-res image pack of 12 sketchtoons?
What about sizes? Greg Storey offers his Airbag desktops in the following sizes:
800x600, 1024x768, 1280x854, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1200 and 3072x2300
I can't do the 3072x2300 size reasonably, and really, I think 1920x1200 is probably the top end anyway.
Let me know your thoughts while I mull this idea over. :-)

What about using them as sort of a loss leader. Put your coffee swag URL at the bottom of each (maybe only provide 6 or something like that). So you can download the desktop images, but each would have a URL that points to a site where you sell calendars, mugs, etc.

Interesting idea Ian. I'm also fiddling around with the idea to make iPhone/iPod touch wallpaper JPGs from the 12 images as a freebie.
Hmmm... :-)

Heh, that's a good idea. I like that one. Could be interesting to provide them in the right size for iPhones/touch, Blackberry's and maybe Treo's. So you cover most of the bases (assuming those other ones can have desktop type images).

Ian, thanks for the comment. I've gone ahead and made iPhone/iPod touch compatible wallpapers to start with.

For the desktops, I'd go for 1280x1024 and smaller. As to a price, hmmm... I have no idea. I've never paid for desktop wallpaper before or even looked. I just love the art and want to support you doing more of it, hence the suggestion of a price or donation.
I'm with you about high rez art being in the wild. Perhaps an alternative, at least for desktops, would be to make a collage of the 12 as a wallpaper. *shrug* :)
Posted by: Les at November 27, 2007 9:23 AM
Les, I'm thinking about creating a new desktop version of the art somehow -- maybe similar to the iPhone/touch wallpapers with just the coffee illustration and name with a large field of color.
That way it's a little cleaner and clearer which works better for a desktop and is unique to itself.
Once I have those ready, I think I'll put them on Flickr. :-)

BTW, Thanks for the mention of the donation. I will maybe add a PayPal address to the post and Flickr pages. I like the idea of giving something like that away and letting the user decide payment. :-)

brother Rohdes,
I've been running into your coffee calendar (as I suspect you've been running into mine)out on the rough roads of the internet. Here I thought I was so clever, coming up with a unique scheme for '08. In any case, in the spirit of the coffee calendar brotherhood, if you give me a mailing address I'll send you a copy.
Best,
RLM
