The Sketchnote Handbook: Book Version Details

SOME OF THE QUESTIONS I hear again and again about The Sketchnote Handbook include: How are the different versions of The Sketchnote Handbook similar and different from each other? Is the video in the Video Edition the same as the DVD? Is there an eBook version I can buy?

To clarify the different versions of the book, I've detailed each version below:

1. The Sketchnote Handbook - Video Edition

I feel this edition is the best value because it includes the fully illustrated book, with detailed information about how I came to sketchnoting,Tsh video structures of sketchnotes and how to create sketchnotes yourself, with great worksheets in chapter 7. It also includes a code that lets you access all 20 of the the streaming videos (1 hour 10 minutes worth) at Peachpit.com.

The special video edition of the book offers a different perspective on sketchnoting than you get from the book alone that's both immediate and complementary, while still unique and compelling.

In the book, I show you sketchnoting techniques for translating ideas into simple drawings and type; in the video I actually put you in the room with me so you can watch as I work and see how the drawings emerge from my pen and unfold on the page.

The video edition provides access to 1 hour and 10 minutes of beautiful, documentary-style video tutorials. You'll see me in action as I demonstrate the drawing and sketchnoting techniques discussed in the book. Beyond the book, the video edition includes a series of episodes where I sketchnote a talk live — from start to finish — at an on-site event.

As I sketchnote the live talk, you can see what it's like to take visual notes in real time, how quickly I need to draw to capture big ideas, and the types of visual choices I make when taking notes with pictures.

2. The Sketchnote Handbook

Tsh regThis edition is the same printed book as the Video Edition — a fully illustrated book, but with no video component whatsoever. It has detailed information about how I came to sketchnoting, structures of sketchnotes and how to create sketchnotes yourself, with some great worksheets in chapter 7.

This version is great if you just want the book.

3. The Sketchnote Handbook - PDF eBook

Tsh reg pdfThis edition is the same as the printed book, but in PDF eBook format with your name watermarked into the PDF. it is the same fully illustrated book, with no video component, and has the same information about how I came to sketchnoting, structures of sketchnotes and how to create sketchnotes yourself, with some great worksheets in chapter 7.

This version looks great on an iPad, and is a good choice if you just want the book.

4. The Sketchnote Handbook - DVD Video

Tsh dvd This is the complete video series on DVD. It has the same content - 1 hour and 10 minutes of beautiful, documentary-style video tutorials as included as streaming video in the Video Edition of the book. You can watch over my shoulder as I sketchnote concepts and a complete event from start to finish — all on one DVD.

This is a good companion to the regular book, the eBook PDF version or if you prefer a physical DVD disc.

5. The Sketchnote Handbook - Online Video

ShowCover aspx This is the complete video series online, in streaming format. It is the same content - 1 hour and 10 minutes of beautiful, documentary-style video tutorials as included in the Video Edition of the book. You can watch over my shoulder as I sketchnote concepts and a complete event from start to finish — all online.

This is a good companion to the regular book, the eBook PDF version or if you prefer streaming video.

5. The Sketchnote Handbook - Chapter 4 PDF

Tsh ch4To see what the book looks like, we've created a sample chapter PDF you can download.

It includes the complete front-matter (copyright, table of contents, acknowledgments, introduction, author bio) and the full index, so you can really see how the book's illustrations look, see the structure and get more details on other chapters before you buy. Looks great on an iPad by the way!

November 23, 2012 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

Is there a combination of the video edition with the PDF version? I'd like both, but if I can save on a package deal (I see regular book and PDF package on Peachpit's site) I'd like to.

December 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDaryl

Daryl - you're the second person to ask about that within 24 hours, which is a good sign. There is not a package like that, but I am going to ask about it.

I know we have a book + eBook package for the regular version (no video) so I think a combo package with video version + eBook makes a ton of sense!

I will keep you posted on that here, since I will want to update the options.

December 5, 2012 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

Just to clarify → I want all three parts, video, physical, and ebook. Normally I'd skip the physical version, but your interview on CMD+Space mentioned the sketching work area in the physical version and so I'd like to get the physical book as well.

Thanks!

December 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDaryl

Thanks for that Daryl, I agree wholeheartedly and will note that to my editor at Peachpit for paper book, streaming video = video edition plus the PDF in a single package for one price.

Thanks for the feedback - I really appreciate and welcome it!

Another vote for the ebook + video purchase combination. I attempted to buy the physical book + video package via Peachpit, but the membership/checkout process for non-US customers was so onerous that I abandoned the idea. An all electronic delivery would make more sense for me.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJames

James, thanks for your feedback. I'm working to see if we can make a virtual package happen, so ill update any new options here if and when.

I'm also hearing Peachpit's shipping costs to Canada are crazy high ($18) so if you're in Canada I have to recommend Amazon.ca.

Thanks again!

Mike

December 9, 2012 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

Peachpit's shipping costs to Canada are onerous, so I will order the print book from Amazon. I did however purchase the PDF version from Peachpit - thanks for the code! - since I didn't want to wait!

December 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGrant Palin

Grant, I have to agree - $18 shipping is just crazy. Just learned that Chapters.indigo.ca just received copies in-stock and will ship within Canada for free at their price ($26 CDN). So check that out too!

December 12, 2012 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

In my experience, Chapters and Amazon.ca are quicker, while Amazon.com has better selection and lower prices, but brings in the exchange rate. If time is not an issue, Amazon.com is sometimes the best deal. I usually cross-compare total prices and shipping times over the three sites.

December 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGrant Palin

That's good advice Grant - thank you! I appreciate all of the feedback from Canadians on the ground. I am by no means an expert on that. :-)

December 14, 2012 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

PDF + video! As it stands, one has to buy the DVD and the PDF separately, which cost $14 more than the physical book and video streaming. I don't want physical media (and I'd prefer to download the video rather than stream it).

December 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDon Morris

Don, hopefully this is a decent option for you and others. Peachpit is working on a PDF + Online Video combo, but I don't know timing or pricing.

And remember to use the code SKETCHNOTE for 35% off. That works on anything you buy (so a PDF + Online Video separately do drop quite a bit) and is valid through 12/31/2014.

December 17, 2012 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

Don - the streaming on Peachpit.com used MOV files - so I suspect if you are a little dedicated, those MOV files could probably be downloaded to your computer.

December 17, 2012 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

Hey!

I just purchased the Book (the Video Edition) via Amazon.de

Is there any chance to get access to the videos before my book actually arrives?

December 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

Hi Mike
I had been trying to buy your book in eBook format from link that you provided but I had have problems with my credit card and I don´t know why.
I am from Venezuela so I have to buy eBook format to download to my computer.
By the way, when I contact customer service of Peachpit.com site to clarify me what happenned with my credit card, I receive that message:

"Thank you for contacting customer service. Our office is currently closed in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. We apologize for any delays you may experience in receiving a response. When we return on Monday, November 26th, we will begin responding to your emails. Our office hours are: Monday through Friday of 8:45AM-5:00PM EST."

As you can see a problem must be ocurring because we are in DECEMBER 25!!..
Do you know what happen?
Tank you in advance

Regards,,

December 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAngel Oti

Thanks Michael! The book itself has a video code in the back - so you'll need the book for the streaming videos.

December 26, 2012 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

Angel - that is very strange! I suspect someone left that message on after Thanksgiving and never switched it back.

I would try again on Wednesday, after the 1st and if you have trouble, contact me directly.

Mike

Hi, Mike

Hi Mike,

Peachpit - where to start? They just don't get e-books. Not even close. The site is awful for purchasing the PDF version, it times out, crashes, builds as a mess and when it does work it wants shipping address for an ebook (!) then won't accept PO Box for address, then doesn't accept non-US states and ph numbers. I've given up. The book looks good, but this is too laborious - and not the first time Peachpit have dropped the ball - they are so 1995. Can you find another another eBook vendor please?

January 16, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJay

Jay, thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience at Peachpit with your PDF purchase - it sounds painful just to read!

I'm going to forward it on to my Peachpit team so they know of your frustrations. If you email me privately (mike@rohdesign.com), I would like to cc you, so you can help them by answering questions, if you like.

We are working on the Kindle version, which has had issues, and hope to have that soon.

Mike

January 16, 2013 | Registered CommenterMike Rohde

Thanks Mike - will do.

I have since ordered a physical copy from another vendor, so you still got the sale - but I was hoping for an e-version. Kindle could be good, although doesn't resolve art so well does it? (iPad OK, but kindle itself can look kind of greyscale)

January 16, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJay

Thanks - please do email me Jay. I've mentioned your bad experience to my team and they want to hear from you to improve the process.

As for Kindle - it's a "print replica" document, and is only available to buy on the iPad, Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, Android and Mac or PC. It isn't at all available on any grayscale Kindle.

Well, at this moment (1/17/13) it's being fixed, so it's not available at all, but I am hoping we will have an updated Kindle edition up again soon.
