Wow! Podcasting is fun! :-)

I've just completed Rohdesign Podcast 02 over lunch break, using GarageBand to knit together the intro and exit music with my spoken audio. Here's episode 02 in flash as an MP3 and the full RSS feed.

In this second episode, I talk about the positive response to the 1st episode, planning my SXSW schedule, streamlining and improving the process of producing this podcast with GarageBand, and getting my analog and digital tools organized.

GarageBand Rocks!
GarageBand is wonderful for producing podcasts. It's simple, yet offers many features to streamline the process. I can record audio and filter it to sound better on one layer (you can hear the difference comparing episodes 01 and 02), drop the intro and exit music on 2 separate layers, and then embed an image and add text on a fourth metadata layer. It's like Photoshop for audio!

Once everything is tuned and organized, I can simply generate an combined MP3 file to the desktop or iTunes, ready for putting on the server. Awesome!

I agree -- sound quality is MUCH improved! Looking forward to hearing about SXSW as I can't be there myself.

Just a personal opinion which you are more than welcome to ignore -- I found the intro song a tad bit too long for me. I just want to skip right to the meat of your presentation!

Mashby, thanks! I didn't change mics! I used the same Logitech headset but recorded in GarageBand and applied a filter, which worked very well. GarageBand is gonna make doing these daily for the SXSW event much, MUCH easier.

Corrie, thanks for the feedback. I'm going to play in GarageBand and trim the song length a bit as I wondered about it myself. I bet I could trim 10 secs or maybe 15 secs off and not ruin the song whatsoever. We'll see in episode 03!

Not to get all technical on you, but in audio they are called "tracks" not "layers" ;)

I am curious which Logitech headset you are using? I am considering a podcast using GarageBand and am lost as a mic to use.

I have the Logitech Premium USB Headset 350, though I don't know if other models have superceded it by now -- it's a few years old. I found a couple on Amazon:

It works pretty well for Skype and recording voice.

Hi Mike,Apologies for the delay in getting back to you on the podcast, but I see you already have a great many positive feedback comments - Rock on!Your podcasts are sounding better with the new mic, second cast was much improved from the first one, although I think it sounded a little 'treble-ey'. But it was definitely crisp and legible.

Odeo player is neat too.

I've been doing some audio recording on the Mac myself lately and found out (the hard way) all about pre-amping USB mics etc. If you're really getting into this you may want to look at one of those funky Podcast specific recording devices form the likes of Belkin.

Love the intro music BTW.

And - Ireland's first Apple Store is due to open soon right here in Belfast! I'll be like a kid in a toyshop, in fact I will actually be a kid in a toyshop.
